How are cannabinoids made in the plant?

Cannabinoid biosynthesis in Cannabis starts with CBGA (from olivetolic acid and geranyl pyrophosphate). THCA, CBDA and CBCA synthases compete for that acid. Heat then decarboxylates the acids to Δ9-THC, CBD, CBC and, from leftover CBGA, CBG. The varins repeat the same map from CBGVA. CBN is not on the tree; it forms by oxidation of THC.

CBN is not on this tree; it is an oxidation product of THC. CBL is a photoproduct of CBC. The varins repeat the same shape starting from CBGVA.

Where does CBG sit on the map?

CBG is the decarboxylated form of whatever CBGA the three synthases did not consume. The enzymes act on CBGA, not on CBG, which is why the mother-cannabinoid nickname belongs to the acid.
