Mother cannabinoid

What is CBG?

CBG (cannabigerol) is a non-intoxicating phytocannabinoid. Its acid, CBGA, is the single precursor that three plant synthases branch into the THC, CBD and CBC lines. Neutral CBG is the decarboxylated form of that parent acid, which is why it is called the mother cannabinoid.

Formula
C21H32O2

Origin

In the plant, olivetolic acid plus geranyl pyrophosphate yields CBGA. CBGA either decarboxylates to CBG or is taken up by THCA, CBDA or CBCA synthase. The three enzymes act on the acid, not on neutral CBG.

Established

  • Chemical identity: C21H32O2, CAS 25654-31-3.
  • Biosynthetic role of CBGA as the pentyl branch point.
  • In-vitro CB1 antagonism, which is the chemistry behind calling it non-intoxicating.
  • In-vitro 5-HT1A antagonism and TRP-channel activity, both laboratory findings rather than human outcomes.
  • One acute human trial: Cuttler et al. 2024, a crossover in 34 healthy adults given 20 mg oral CBG, measuring self-reported anxiety and stress. It is graded Low and was not run by Peregrine.

Not yet

  • Established or demonstrated human efficacy for any condition; the Atlas gap-map shows none among the conditions it tracks.
  • A dose, duration, or structure/function claim on a Peregrine isolate.
  • Blood-pressure effects in people via the α2-adrenoceptor, which are hypothesised from in-vitro potency and have not been measured clinically.

Questions

Is CBG the mother cannabinoid?

Strictly, the acid is. CBGA is the precursor the plant branches from, and CBG is the neutral form left after decarboxylation. The nickname carries over to CBG because it is the same skeleton without the carboxyl group.

Does CBG get you high?

No. CBG is not Δ9-THC, and in laboratory work it antagonises CB1 rather than activating it, which is the chemistry behind calling it non-intoxicating. That is a receptor description, not a wellness claim.

Is there a human CBG trial?

Yes, one: Cuttler et al. 2024, an acute placebo-controlled crossover in 34 healthy adults, graded Low by CBG Atlas. It was not a disease trial and Peregrine did not run it. The CBG human-trial page walks through the design.

Can I buy CBG isolate from Peregrine?

Yes. We sell wholesale CBG isolate from 5 g to 100 kg; contact us for pricing.
