How is cannabinoid isolate made?

Cannabinoid isolate is made by extracting cannabinoids from biomass (typically with ethanol or CO₂), winterising to remove waxes and lipids, decarboxylating acid forms to neutrals when the target is a neutral, enriching the target cannabinoid by chromatography, and then crystallising it — often more than once — until the named molecule is the only species above the reporting limit. ≥99.9% purity is a crystallisation result, not an extraction result. Acid-form isolates skip the heat step; CBN and CBL are produced by controlled conversion rather than harvested.

What are the steps from biomass to isolate?

Most producers follow the same skeleton. Extraction pulls cannabinoids, terpenes, waxes and pigments out of the plant material. Winterisation chills the extract in ethanol so waxes and lipids precipitate and can be filtered off. Decarboxylation heats the material to convert acids (CBGa, CBDa) into their neutral forms when the target is a neutral. Distillation or chromatography then enriches the target cannabinoid, and crystallisation — dissolving the enriched fraction and letting the target crystallise while impurities stay in solution — takes it to isolate purity. Repeating the crystallisation is what moves a lot from 98% to ≥99.9%.

Why is ≥99.9% a crystallisation result?

Extraction and distillation separate by broad polarity and boiling point; they cannot separate cannabinoids that are close in both, such as CBD, CBC and CBG. Crystallisation exploits a different property — the target molecule's ability to pack into a lattice that excludes everything else. Each pass removes more of the minor cannabinoids, colour bodies and residual solvent, which is also why residual-solvent results belong on a per-lot COA: the last crystallisation and drying steps determine them.

How are acid-form isolates made without decarboxylating them?

By keeping heat out. CBGa and CBDA are extracted cold, enriched by chromatography rather than distillation, and crystallised without a decarboxylation step. Every additional minute of heat, light or time converts a fraction of the acid to its neutral, so the CBG value on a CBGa COA is a record of handling as much as a purity result. It is also why the acids ship 2–8 °C.

How are CBN and CBL made if the plant does not make them?

Neither has a plant synthase. CBN forms as THC and THCa oxidise and aromatise with oxygen, light, heat and time; commercial CBN is produced by controlled conversion of a THC-line precursor and then purified, which is why the residual Δ9-THC line on a CBN COA is read closely. CBL is the photochemical rearrangement product of CBC; it is produced by controlled light exposure and purified for use as a reference and impurity marker.

What does the process leave behind on the COA?

Residual solvents from the last crystallisation and drying; minor cannabinoids that survived, including the acid or neutral partner; heavy metals and pesticides carried from biomass if present; and water activity. Peregrine lists a lot as Available only after identity and assay clear; residual panels ship with the pack when requested.

Isolate, distillate or water-dispersible powder — which is which?

A distillate is the mixed fraction after distillation, before crystallisation — several cannabinoids, a profile rather than a purity. An isolate is one named molecule at a stated purity with a CAS number. A water-dispersible powder is an isolate re-formulated onto a carrier and spray-dried so it disperses in water; its assay is cannabinoid-in-powder, never isolate purity.

Questions

What solvent is used to make cannabinoid isolate?

Ethanol and CO₂ are the common extraction solvents; crystallisation solvents vary by producer. Residual-solvent results on the lot COA show what remains.

Can you get 99.9% purity from distillation alone?

No. Distillation separates by boiling point and leaves a mixed fraction. Crystallisation is what reaches isolate purity.

Is CBN isolate extracted from hemp?

CBN is produced by conversion of THC-line chemistry and then purified, because no plant enzyme makes it. Origin is lot-specific on the COA.

Why does CBC isolate sometimes ship as an oil?

Cannabichromene has a low melting point and crystallises reluctantly; a ≥99.9% lot may be a viscous fraction or a solid depending on the campaign.
