CBG vs CBN: what’s the difference?

CBG comes from CBGA, the acid the plant branches every pentyl cannabinoid from, after decarboxylation. CBN comes from Δ9-THC and THCA that have oxidised with oxygen, light, heat and time; there is no CBN synthase. CBG sits at the start of the biosynthetic map, while CBN forms downstream as a product of storage. CAS 25654-31-3 (CBG) and 521-35-7 (CBN).

Origin

A brief that says ‘sleep cannabinoid’ is using marketing language. The COA still has to name either CBN or CBG at a stated purity.

Established

  • Opposite places on the biosynthetic/chemical map.
  • Separate CAS.

Not yet

  • Evidence that CBN is a proven sleep aid.

Questions

Which one is for sleep?

Neither carries a sleep claim from Peregrine. CBN is the one marketed for sleep, and we sell it as an ingredient. Sleepz, our 7-hour formula in development, is a separate product.
