THCV
THCV as an API: where the purity falls short, plus standards and GMP
THCV is the propyl analogue of THC and is not a shortened THC. No approved drug uses it as an active ingredient and no pharmacopoeia publishes a standard for it. Peregrine supplies research-grade THCV isolate at ≥99.9% today, and is direct about the gap: that figure is a research-isolate bar, not an API bar, and the material does not yet reach the purity an API requires. Closing that is active work.

- API status
- No approved drug uses THCV. Today's material does not yet meet API purity.
- Standard status
- No USP or Ph. Eur. monograph. Manufacturer-certified CRMs only.
- What Peregrine sells today
- Research-grade isolate, ≥99.9%, 5 g upward, COA per lot.
Can I buy THCV as an API today?
No, and Peregrine will say so about its own material rather than let the phrase drift. An API is the active ingredient of a drug product, manufactured under ICH Q7, with an impurity profile qualified under ICH Q3A and stability established under ICH Q1A. No approved drug uses THCV.
A headline purity figure and an API are not the same bar. An API is judged on its characterised impurity profile, not only on how high the assay reads. Today Peregrine's THCV does not yet reach the purity that API status requires, and the company is working to make that happen. It is engineering in progress, not a plan on a slide.
Where do I buy a THCV standard?
From one of the certified-reference-material houses. ISO 17034 covers producing the material, ISO/IEC 17025 the laboratory running the method. They are not the same badge.
Cayman, Cerilliant, Restek and LGC all list THCV as a certified standard, in milligram vials.
Neither pharmacopoeia publishes a THCV standard. And as with CBDV, mass will not identify it: the two share the formula C19H26O2 and a molecular weight of 286.42.
What does GMP THCV actually mean?
It means whichever GMP the supplier has in mind, which is why the word alone is not useful. ICH Q7 is the API regime. 21 CFR 210/211 covers finished drug products. 21 CFR 111 is dietary supplements. ISO 22716 is cosmetics. Ask which one, who audited it, and when.
THCV carries a second consideration that has nothing to do with GMP: it draws destination questions. Peregrine reviews THCV and isomer-adjacent lots before booking a carrier.
What does pharma grade THCV mean?
Nothing codified. No regulation defines it, and no monograph exists for THCV to be measured against. The specification is what carries information.
What does Peregrine sell today?
Research-grade THCV isolate at ≥99.9%, lipid- and ethanol-soluble and practically insoluble in water, from a 5 g research cut upward. Production is campaign-based on low-abundance varin biomass, and a volume is listed as Available only after identity and assay clear. Destination review applies before shipping.
Peregrine is working to supply all of it — API-grade material, certified standards and GMP-declared volume — at research and industrial scale worldwide, through its own patented synthesis process.
Buying THCV
Where do I buy THCV API?
Nobody sells a THCV API, and Peregrine's own material is not one either. A headline purity figure and an API are not the same bar. An API is judged on its characterised impurity profile, not only on how high the assay reads. Today Peregrine's THCV does not yet reach the purity that API status requires, and the company is working to make that happen. It is engineering in progress, not a plan on a slide.
That is a more useful answer than a yes would be. The purity work and the volume work are the same programme here, and Peregrine would rather name the gap than sell around it.
Is bulk THCV API available?
Bulk THCV is available from Peregrine at research grade from 5 g upward; bulk THCV at API grade is not available from anyone. The two statements are easy to blur and worth keeping apart on a purchase order.
THCV also carries a shipping question the other compounds do not. Not every lot is hemp-derived, origin is disclosed per lot, and destination law decides whether a lane exists at all. Confirm the destination before the volume, not after.
Can I order a sample THCV API quantity?
A 5 g research cut ships to a registered facility with its lot certificate. Treat it as a research-grade sample, because that is what it is — qualifying it as though it were API-grade material would be qualifying against a claim nobody has made.
If you are building an identity method, ask for the chromatography rather than relying on mass. THCV and CBDV share a molecular formula and a mass spectrum will not tell them apart.
Who manufactures THCV API?
No supplier holds API status, and for THCV there is a second reason beyond the regulatory one: the purity available today does not reach the bar. That is true of Peregrine's material as well, and it is stated on this page rather than buried. A supplier quoting THCV API without naming that gap has either not measured it or is not telling you.
The other THCV-specific question is destination. It is the compound in this section most likely to run into a national control schedule, and the answer differs by country rather than by supplier. Peregrine asks where material is going before quoting, which is slower than a checkout page and avoids shipping into a schedule nobody checked.
Questions
Should I trust a listing where I find THCV API for sale?
Trust the certificate, not the label. Ask for the identity method and confirm it separates THCV from CBDV, ask for origin on the lot, and ask what the impurity profile shows. A listing using the word API without an ICH Q7 audit behind it is using a word, not making a claim it can support.
Is THCV an active pharmaceutical ingredient?
Not today. No approved drug uses THCV as its active ingredient, and Peregrine's current material does not reach the purity an API requires. Raising it is work in progress.
Is there a USP standard for THCV?
There is not one. THCV appears in neither pharmacopoeia, so the certified milligram quantities on the market are certified by their producer.
Can Peregrine supply a THCV sample?
Yes, the 5 g research cut, to a university or registered laboratory, with the lot COA. THCV destinations are reviewed before a carrier is booked.
Is THCV intoxicating?
THCV is not shortened THC and should not be assumed to behave like it. Peregrine sells it as a research ingredient and makes no claim about its effects.
Why can THCV not be identified by mass?
It shares a molecular formula and weight with CBDV. Retention time against a qualified reference standard, or structural identity by NMR, is what separates them.
Is any THCV API supplier selling at API grade?
No, and for THCV there are two reasons rather than one. No approved drug uses it, and the purity available today — Peregrine's included — falls short of an API bar. A supplier quoting THCV API without naming that gap has not measured it. Expect any serious supplier to ask your destination before quoting, because national control schedules differ.
